Periodic closings of Green Circle through Whiting: Summer, 2008

A new wastewater treatment plant is being constructed in the Village of Whiting this summer near the Plover River. Portions of the Mainland Meadows/Papermill Trail near its crossing of the Plover River will be affected by the construction.

Please note that the area indicated on the map is an active construction site. Trail users must use caution when traveling through this portion, as heavy machinery and construction crews will be sharing the road.

In addition, the trail will be closed for brief periods of time (10-20 minutes) during the weekdays while construction is taking place.

Your patience during this construction is appreciated. If you have any questions, contact Schmeeckle Reserve at (715) 346-4992.

Moses Creek segment of Green Circle rerouted for Spring and Summer, 2008

Changing conditions have resulted in a portion of the Green Circle Trail being temporarily rerouted.  Because a boardwalk is being removed, a segment of the Moses Creek trail off of Wilshire Avenue (north of Schmeeckle Reserve) is now closed.  A scenic and environmentally friendly boardwalk is planned nearby.

The Green Circle Board is working to develop an alternative route for 2008 with a goal of securing a permanent new route for that portion of the trail northeast of Stevens Point. For trail users safety, please follow the signs along the trail designating a temporary route while alternate solutions are explored in this area. The new route and maps of the revised route will be available as soon as possible.

In 2007, a portion of the River Pines trail was closed and rerouted. The result was an improved trail through a more scenic, natural area.

We thank the landowners who have allowed the Green Circle to pass through their property in this section for the past 16 years.

Check this page for further updates as this project progresses. You may also contact Schmeeckle Reserve for more information.

Thanks to the generosity of numerous residential and corporate landowners, the 31-mile Green Circle continues to cross private and public properties. The Green Circle also passes through many parks and other public lands including Stevens Point’s Bukolt, Zenoff, Pfiffner, Plover River and Iverson Parks, Plover’s Lake Pacawa Park, the Village of Whiting Park , the UW-Stevens Point Schmeeckle Reserve, and Izaak Walton League land. This popular hiking and biking trail has 14 connecting segments that wind primarily through natural areas.

The Green Circle Board and hundreds of trail users are grateful for the generosity of these private and public landowners. Our goal is to find permanent solutions whenever possible to secure the trail for future generations. Donations to the Community Foundation's Green Circle Fund are used, in part, for land purchases and trail upgrades. Click here for donation information.

Trail users are asked to follow signs and routes.  Please respect the privacy of landowners and travel only on designated trails.

Popular Trail Segment Reopens

On May 12, 2007, the Green Circle Trail lovers held a Grand Reopening celebration for one of the most popular parts of the Trail.

The River Pines/Paper Mill section of the Green Circle Trail had been closed since fall 2006 due to construction in the area. What many people did not know is that work began immediately to reroute the trail. Thanks to the cooperative efforts of Stora Enso North America, Consolidated Water Power Company, the Village of Whiting, Portage County Parks Department, Zblewski Bros LLC, Construcks, Inc and Schmeeckle Reserve, the Green Circle was brought, again, full circle.

A brief ceremony took place at the corner of Whiting and Sherman Avenues dedicating the newly reopened segment of the Trail and thanking those who played a key role in restoring the Green Circle.

Be sure to visit the new segment this summer and fall.
